Metacognition in Second Language Speech Perception and Production

نویسندگان

چکیده

In this study, we assessed metacognition in nonnative language speech perception and production. Spanish novice learners of French identified produced the vowel contrast /ø/–/œ/ and, on each trial, rated their confidence responses. Participants’ predicted identification accuracy, suggesting that learners’ metacognitive skills are efficient at onset learning. However, participants’ production did not align with a fine-grained precision measure own (indexed by Mahalanobis distance to native target-vowel space) nor categorical (in terms being within/outside speakers’ zone), indicating sound is yet learners. Overall, ratings were similar highly correlated between tasks, but there was no association two domains task performance or ability. We discuss ramifications these findings for learning theories teaching strategies as well ongoing debate about perception–production relationship.

Production and Perception of Syllable Structure in Second-language Speech

Production and perception of syllables in a second language (L2) that has relatively complex syllable structure, such as English, is expected to be difficult for native speakers of a language with relatively simple syllable structure, such as Japanese. A series of experiments investigated the perception, production, and learning of English syllables by native Japanese speakers. Results showed t...

Second language speech production

The study of second langiage (L2) speech production has a long history in second language (SLA) research, both for what it can tell us about the development of the specific skill and how it might illuminate the general processes of SLA. Over time, studies in L2 phonological attainment have become a battleground for perennial issues in SLA research encompassing cognitive, psychological, and soci...

Raters’ Perception and Expertise in Evaluating Second Language Compositions

The consideration of rater training is very important in construct validation of a writing test because it is through training that raters are adapted to the use of students’ writing ability instead of their own criteria for assessing compositions (Charney, 1984). However, although training has been discussed in the literature of writing assessment, there is little research regarding raters’ pe...

Do Native-language Loanwords Affect Second-language Speech Perception?

Japanese has many loanwords from English that have different syllable structure from the source words, e.g., /sutoresu/ from English stress. To investigate whether the abundance of such familiar loanwords interferes with accurate perception of the English source words, native Japanese listeners were asked to count syllables in spoken English words that varied in the degree to which familiar loa...

Impact of second-language experience in infancy: brain measures of first- and second-language speech perception.

Language experience 'narrows' speech perception by the end of infants' first year, reducing discrimination of non-native phoneme contrasts while improving native-contrast discrimination. Previous research showed that declines in non-native discrimination were reversed by second-language experience provided at 9-10 months, but it is not known whether second-language experience affects first-lang...
